Sheriffah Noor Khamseah Al-Idid Dato Syed Ahmad Idid, a member of Women in Nuclear Global (WIN) and a Global Innovation & Nuclear Advocate, has shared with the audience of BERNAMA, the Malaysian National News Agency, her account from a recent trip to Zambia and her efforts to enhance the participation of African women in the nuclear field. The trip was made possible within the framework of project MC 5.01/15 B.
Sheriffah presented on Stakeholder Engagement for Nuclear Power during the Conference on Enhancing Africa’s Capacity on Nuclear Safety, Security and Safeguards in SADC countries, held in Lusaka, Zambia in August-September 2018, and organized by the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC) with support from the European Commission with local partners.
“There are a number of concerns which people express when it comes to nuclear science and its various applications. Therefore, enhancement of public awareness and sensitisation of nuclear science and its applications is vital”, insists Sheriffah. She emphasizes the need for different groups to reach out to various stakeholders regarding nuclear power and insists that one such group - women - are most suitable in speaking to the public regarding nuclear power. After the conclusion of the workshop in Lusaka, Sheriffah convened a briefing for all women attending the event. They all agreed to consider establishing Women in Nuclear (WIN) Chapter in their respective countries.
A book titled Stakeholder Engagement for Nuclear Power was subsequently launched at the conclusion of the workshop. It outlines the various stakeholders for nuclear power as well as the messages, messengers and channels of communicating to stakeholders regarding the safe and peaceful use and benefits of nuclear power. The book was compiled by Sheriffah as a follow-up to her participation in the Nuclear Advocacy and Communications workshop, convened in Nairobi, Kenya in 2017 by the African Young Generation in Nuclear (AYGN) and the Kenyan Young Generation in Nuclear (KYGN) and supported by ISTC.
